Matanzas is a province of western Cuba west limiting Mayabeque Province, east with the provinces of Villa Clara and Cienfuegos, on the north by the Straits of Florida and south by the Caribbean Sea. Its capital is the city of Matanzas and has coastal tourist destination: Varadero. Christopher Columbus on his second voyage, in 1494, observed the southern coast of Matanzas, however the true initial contact of the Spaniards takes place in 1508, when Sebastián de Ocampo makes the circumnavigation of the island. The first significant event in its history, and which bears his name, happens in 1510, when a group of aborigines killed a group of Spanish. The fact takes on special importance because it had not yet started the conquest of Cuba and this early rebellious action acquires merit of the primacy at the same time, by its bloody repercussions Matanzas gave the name to the place.
